Modular GRP covers for odour control at wastewater treatment works
PJNC designed and supplied a bespoke GRP cover system to control odours generated by high-rate filters at wastewater treatment facilities. The solution was developed to provide effective containment and odour extraction while accommodating the varying sizes and geometries of filter beds.
Project Requirement
Odour control was required for high-rate filter beds operating within a wastewater treatment works. The cover system needed to integrate with existing treatment infrastructure while supporting environmental compliance and effective odour extraction.
Traditional large, moulded GRP covers were unsuitable due to their fixed geometry and handling limitations, creating the need for a more adaptable solution capable of covering filters of varying sizes and layouts.
The GRP Solution
A modular GRP cover system was developed to provide a flexible alternative to traditional moulded covers. The GRP panels were configured to suit the specific dimensions and geometry of each filter bed, allowing the system to be adapted to a wide range of installations.
GRP was selected as a suitable material for this application due to its corrosion resistance and compatibility with the aggressive environments typically found within wastewater treatment works.

Fabrication & Installation
The GRP cover components were manufactured off site and supplied in modular sections ready for installation. This approach allowed the system to be installed efficiently without the need for large lifting equipment.
On site, the panels were assembled directly over the filter beds, enabling installation to be carried out with minimal disruption to ongoing treatment operations.
Performance & Suitability
The completed GRP cover system provides effective odour containment for high-rate filters while supporting long-term use in corrosive wastewater environments. Its modular construction allows for flexibility, ease of installation and ongoing adaptability as operational requirements evolve.
