GRP Staircase Installation

As part of a new hangar development at Bournemouth International Airport, PJNC was appointed to design and supply a bespoke GRP staircase solution to serve as a fire escape for the facility. A key challenge for this project was the need to avoid interference with sensitive airport radar systems, which would have occurred had a traditional steel staircase been used.

Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) was chosen due to its radio-transparent properties, making it ideal for use near radar equipment. GRP eliminated electromagnetic interference and offered corrosion resistance, a long service life, and minimal maintenance, all essential benefits for an airside installation.

Tailored Design
for a Constrained Site

PJNC designed a multilevel staircase on a very limited footprint. The total height of the staircase was 7.5m with an internal width of 1m. Although the staircase was fixed to the building, it was designed to be self-supporting.

The project design entailed detail 3D design model, fabrication drawings and an extensive Structural Verifcation Report. Due to limited space, all parts were prefabricated off site with assembly and installing on site.
